My background
I've done artwork of one sort
or another pretty much all of my life. (I remember watching Disney's
animated Alice in Wonderland when I was in the second grade, drawing
a picture of Alice falling down the rabbit hole, and after that
I never stopped.) I've made part of my living as a visual artist
(fine and commercial) since the mid-1980s.
I grew up in Alaska, but finished
high school and then college in Seattle. When I got out of school,
I knew I'd love to make my living as an artist but wasn't sure
how to pursue it. I started out doing portraits down at the Pike
Place Market in Seattle (I was one of those outdoor portrait artists
for a couple of years), then moved on to doing book and magazine
illustrations, drawing and writing comic books and graphic novels.
(I published a line of comics and graphic novels in the late 1980s.)
Later I learned to paint, and did some fine arts painting. In
the 90s I discovered Photoshop, and published a line of Photoshop-generated
comic books. (I also published a
book of short stories in the '90s, and produced and directed
some stageplays, then later moved on to screenwriting, and then
filmmaking).
(My films have played in both local and international festivals.)
Whether I'm working as a writer,
visual artist or filmmaker, the common element is storytelling.
I love storytelling, whatever the medium.
My artwork has appeared in magazines
in the United States and Europe. My comics were originally self-published
in the United States in the 1980s and '90s, then went on to be
printed by one of Europe's largest publishers (Egmont).
I also teach classes
in drawing and painting, cartooning, filmmaking, writing, acting
and other subjects in Seattle.
